A historic decision

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee have announced that the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be rescheduled to 2024, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first time in the history of the Olympic Movement that an edition of the Olympic Games has been postponed by more than a year².

The decision was made after a series of consultations between the IOC President Thomas Bach, the Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto, the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and other stakeholders². The main reason for the postponement was the health and safety of the athletes, the officials, the spectators, and the host community, as well as the need to ensure a fair and level playing field for all participants².

The new dates for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 are 19 July to 4 August 2024, while the new dates for the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 are 20 August to 1 September 2024². The name of the Games will remain unchanged, as a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of the global crisis³.

A joint statement

In a joint statement, the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee said: "We have reached this very difficult decision after carefully considering all the options and scenarios, and after listening to the voices of the athletes, the National Olympic Committees, the International Federations, the broadcasters, the sponsors, and the local authorities. We have also taken into account the latest scientific evidence and the advice of the World Health Organization. We believe that this is the best and the most responsible course of action, in order to protect the health and well-being of everyone involved in the Olympic Games, and to contribute to the global efforts to contain and overcome the pandemic. We are fully committed to delivering safe, secure, and successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, and to showcasing the power of sport and the Olympic values to inspire and unite humanity in these challenging times."²
