Jose Mourinho is reportedly on the verge of signing former Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin for Fenerbahce.

Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, for whom he signed last summer, have given the Frenchman permission to talk with the Turkish giants.

The winger, 27, left Newcastle after four seasons in a £30million move last Julyand penned a three-year deal with the Saudi side.

However, Fenerbahce are now 'very close' to agreeing a deal to sign him according to Turkish journalist Yagız Sabuncuoglu.

Mourinho is tasked with returning the Turkish Super Lig title to Fenerbahce for the first time since 2013-14 on the back of a heart-breaking title race.

The Istanbul club garnered 99 points, winning 31 and only losing one of 38 league games, but lost out to bitter rivals Galatasaray.

They had even beaten Galatasaray 1-0 in their penultimate match and won 6-0 on the final day against Istanbulspor, but their efforts were in vain.

Mourinho attracted tens of thousands of fans to his unveiling at Fenerbahce's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in June, heralding in what he hopes is a glorious new era.

Having been sacked by Roma in January, the Portuguese boss received a hearty welcome and delivered an impassioned address.

Holding up a Fenerbahce shirt, he declared: 'This shirt is now my skin. Your dreams are now my dreams.'

The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham boss has made quick work of bolstering his side ahead of the new season.

Already Fenerbahce have signed former Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu, AC Milan midfielder Rade Krunic, and Turkish full-back Levent Mercan.

It has been a mixed start in pre-season for Mourinho.

His first match saw Fenerbahce beat Romanian outfit Petrolul 2-1 in a friendly before they were held to a 1-1 draw by Austrian club Admira. In both matches they came from behind.

Saint-Maximin managed four goals and 10 assists for Al Ahli last season as they finished third on their return to the Saudi Pro League.

The rich club also boast Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez, and Edouard Mendy on their books.
