'It's finished for Rishi Sunak' says Scottish First Minister John Swinney
I think the Conservative campaign for this election is over. It's finished for the Conservatives and it's finished for Rishi Sunak. The insult that he delivered by leaving Normandy without taking part in the international ceremony, it's just literally beyond comprehension. I cannot fathom what he was thinking about. And if the Prime Minister doesn't realise the importance of being there to pay that tribute, how on earth can he be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom? So I think it's over for the Conservative Party and it's over for Rishi Sunak. And then Stephen Flynn obviously got a a bit of praise for for his position in that debate. Do you think that shows the strength of candidates? And also will will you try and work with Keir Starmer to get a section here to order? Stephen Flynn raised the issues that matter in this election. He raised the issue of spending cuts. He raised the issue of Brexit, erased the issue of migration. All of these are issues the SNP cares deeply about and are central to the future of Scotland. And all the other parties are ignoring them all. They're taking dangerous stances in relation to the Labour Party and the Conservatives are united in a conspiracy of silence about the fact that they both plan £18 billion worth of spending cuts. And that's no my words. Those are the words of the Independent Institute of Fiscal Studies. So the Labour Party has signed up to to continue the spending cuts of the Tories that have done so much damage to the public services of Scotland. And we've got to stop that. And that's what Stephen Flynn did really well last night. He raised the fact that that austerity agenda is damaging us and it'll be carried on by Labour. Brexit is damaging our economy and it'll be carried on by Labour and the restrictions on migration is damaging the Scottish economy and it'll be carried on by Labour. So on all these issues, Stephen Flynn was speaking up, setting out the way in which SNPMPS will put Scotland's interests 1st and demonstrating why the Labour Party is not doing that in this election. And then the second question was, do you think you could work with Keir Starmer to get a section 20 order for independence? Well, I'm, I'm, I'm very prepared to work collaboratively with the United Kingdom government. I've done that in the past and I'll do it again in the future. And I make it very clear that I will work with Keir Starmer. We've got to get into a position of winning this election. That's what I'm focused on doing, making sure that we get as many SNPMPS elected to the House of Commons as we possibly can do. And thereafter I'll be very happy to work with the a new incoming Labour government if that's what the people of this country decide. And the Scottish Greens yesterday confirmed that they would be standing at a record number of candidates in this election. Have you concerned at all the the pro independence vote could be split and ultimately hamper at the SN PS challenge? Obviously an election is about people putting forward their different points of view and there'll be a range of candidates from a range of different parties and it's important that people make their choices. But what I would say to voters in Scotland, if they want Scotland to be independent, they should vote for the one party that's got the strength and the capability to deliver it, and that's the Scottish National Party. That would be my appeal today, that if voters want independence they should vote for the party that's got the track record of securing the progress that's necessary to deliver independence and that's the SNP. And Nicola Sturgeon will be campaigning with some local candidates in the next few weeks. Could we expect her to be campaigning with you yourself? Do you think she's a asset to the party? Well, I, I welcome very much Nicola's contribution to her election campaign. She's supporting a range of different candidates around the country and that's good. And I work collaboratively and closely with Nicola and I welcome her participation in the campaign. And you think she's an asset to the party still? I think Nicola's got a huge amount to contribute to the SNP and to the the cause of Scottish independence and I welcome her involvement in the election campaign. Great. Thank you.
