Why Are Apples Always Found In Fruit In Juices?

The next time you reach for a bottle of fruit juice or smoothie, take a closer look at the ingredients. You might be surprised to find that many of these seemingly diverse beverages are predominantly made from one fruit: apples. This phenomenon, aptly termed "applejuiceification," has garnered attention thanks to a viral post on X, which examined 13 juices from a regular supermarket.

According to the British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA), the addition of apple juice serves a practical purpose. Apples possess a delicate flavor and natural sweetness that can balance out the more potent tastes of other fruits, making for a more palatable beverage.

However, skeptics like Dr. Chris Van Tulleken from UCL argue that the prevalence of apples in juices is more about cost-effectiveness than nutritional value. Apples are inexpensive and high in sugar, making them an economical choice for beverage manufacturers.

Despite their fruity façade, nutritionists caution against considering fruit juices and smoothies as inherently healthy options. Barry Popkin, a renowned nutritionist, asserts that these beverages are essentially concentrated sugar water with flavorings, lacking the fiber and other nutrients found in whole fruits.

So, while fruit juices may offer some vitamin benefits, it's essential to consume them in moderation and prioritize whole fruits for optimal health.
