Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, is now appointed as the new head coach of the Indians men cricket team, as announced by the BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday, July 9th. The significant development marks a new chapter in the Indian cricket, with Gambhir taking over from Rahul Dravid, who stepped down following India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in 2024. At the age of 42 years, Gambhir is set to bring a wealth of experience to the role, having been a key player in the India's World Cup victories in 2007 and 2011. His international career, spanning from 2004 to 2016, saw him participate in 58 Test, 147 ODI's and 37T20 internationals. The BCCI has outlined Gambhir's responsibilities, which include overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. His focus will be on fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork, while also nurturing young talent and preparing the team for future challenges on the global stage. Jayasha, in a social media post, expressed his confidence in Gambhir's appointment, highlighting his understanding of modern crickets, evolving landscape and his experience in various roles throughout his career. Shah believes that Gambhir's clear vision for the Team India, combined with his vast experience will make him an ideal candidate to lead the Indian cricket forward. Gambhir himself expressed his honor to the commitment for the role, stating that serving the country has always been the greatest privilege for his life. He emphasized his goal to make every Indian proud and pledged to do everything in his power to fulfill the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians. The BCCI also took an opportunity to laud the outgoing coach Rahul Dravid for his highly successful tenure. Under Dravid's guidance, Team India emerged as a dominant force across all formats, including winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. His strategic acumen, efforts to nurture talent and leadership were credited with instilling a culture of excellence within the team. Now, Gambhir's first assignment as the head coach will be the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, featuring three ODI's and three T20 Internationals starting from July 27th. This tour will be the first Test of Gambhir's coaching abilities at the international level and will set the tone for his tenure as India's head coach.
