Nairobi - ODM leader Raila Odinga has faced criticism over his stand on the national dialogue proposed by President William Ruto.

On Tuesday, July 9, the former prime minister held a consultative meeting with Ruto over the issues raised by Gen Zs.

However, speaking on the latest development, key Azimio la Umoja leaders have distanced themselves from the talks.

Why Martha Karua cautioned Gen Zs

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua downplayed the relevance of the talks, saying they lacked good faith among the organisers.

Karua cautioned youths to worry about the political class, saying they can easily hijack the genuine reforms Gen Zs are demanding.

"Dialogue can only be meaningful if the players have good faith and are guided by the best interests of the people. Let’s be careful as the political class lest we hijack the genuine clamour for accountability and reforms by the GenZ.
"I agree with those who say action now on the clear and attainable demands of the GenZ to enhance accountability and make the state work for the masses rather than for a handful elites," Karua said.

What Jeremiah Kioni said about national dialogue

On his part, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni shared a cryptic message about how those in power will always unite if faced with a common threat.

According to Kioni, the meeting between the ODM leader and the president was by design.

"Fellow Kenyans, if you’re wondering what just happened at KICC, it’s all by design. The guardians of the Kenyan state wield their power relentlessly to ensure its survival against any violent threat that could undermine its very foundation (the established order)," he said.

How Gen Zs reacted to Raila's stand

In a related development, Raila's call for a dialogue between the opposition and the government to settle the issues bedevilling the Kenyan youth is overly objected to.

Young Kenyans on social media vowed not to allow the veteran politician a chance to negotiate on their behalf .

The country's young population has taken over political activism to demand a change in governance.

What did Ruto promise Gen Z?

  • Ruto revealed he secured one million jobs for Kenyans in 19 countries abroad, asking the youth to take advantage.
  • He asked the youth to apply for the vacancies through the National Employment Authority portal.
  • The president also hinted at a major reshuffle in his government as demanded by Gen Z.
