“The Love Boat”’s Jill Whelan Recalls Drastic Weight Loss After 'Some Crazy Doctor' Put Her on a Diet of 400 Calories a Day

Whelan, who played Captain Stubing’s daughter Vicki, has shared the abuse she and others suffered under the show’s 'misogynist' producer

Jill Whelan — who played Vicki Stubing on the hit ABC show The Love Boat— is sharing the mistreatment she and others experienced at the hands of the show’s late producer, Doug S. Cramer.

“I have great fond memories of my cast and our crew, and [executive producer] Aaron Spelling. Not so fond memories of Doug Cramer, however, because Doug was a misogynist,” Whelan 57, told host Steve Kmetko on his podcast, Still Here Hollywood, about her time on the hit show, which ran from 1977 to 1987.

“He had a reputation of being kind of tough,” Kmetko said.

“I've never talked about it, but he's passed now, and his children are passed as well, so I feel safe in saying...he was not an advocate of women at all,” Whelan, who said she was 11 years old when she started playing the daughter of Captain Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) on the show, shared.

“He was not a good human,” Whelan said about Cramer, whose credits include other hits like Wonder Womanand Dynasty.

“Lauren Tewes, who played Julie McCoy — we would come to a wardrobe fitting at a new season to get new uniforms and new evening gowns and new loungewear, and he would call the wardrobe department and tell them to buy everything one or two sizes smaller than we are, so that we would come in and be embarrassed in fittings [with] things not fitting.”

She continued, “I was going through puberty, and it's you know, things happen in puberty. So I had gone to a fat farm — or, I guess, we would say today, a spa — in Ojai, and I had lost some weight. I was also working with some crazy doctor who had me on 400 calories a day.”

“That’s too drastic,” Kmetko chimed in.

Indeed, the National Institute of Health says “adolescent females require approximately 2200 calories/day.”

“It screws with your metabolism,” Whelan said, adding that Kramer refused to show a full-body shot of her after her weight loss..

“There's a scene where I come out of an elevator, and the doors open into the purser's lobby, and I'm in an evening gown with a sweetheart neckline.”

“It was a full body shot. And Doug said, ‘No. I don't want that shot. I don't wanna see her looking thin. I'm pissed off she was fat in the first place. Neck up only.‘ “

“I had no problem with with anybody," Whelan continued. "I had an incredible experience — except for the Doug Cramer part, which did require a lot of therapy afterwards.”
