Reggie Miller argues with Draymond over the best backcourt ever: "Could you name another two guards that are better than Luka and Kyrie"
During the TNT Tip-Off show before Game 2 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks, guest co-host Draymond Green confronted Pacers Hall of Famer Reggie Miller and called out Miller's fellow commentator and former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy for calling Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving the best backcourt ever.
According to Green, that title belongs to his Golden State teammates Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. Miller didn't take Green's statement silently and went on to defend SVG.
"He didn't say the best backcourt ever," argued Miller. "He said two guards that could go and can get it on their own. Could you name another two guards that (are better than Luka and Kyrie)? Yes Steph, but are you saying, could Klay, you just throw the ball ( and he could score)? On the level of Kyrie, on the level of Luka?"
Best offensive backcourt
To Miller's point, Van Gundy did not say 'best backcourt ever' verbatim. Before the start of Game 1 of the Wolves-Mavs series, SVG called the Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving duo the 'best offensive backcourt' in the history of the NBA.
"Minnesota's top-rated defense is gonna be challenged trying to slow them down arguably the best offensive backcourt in the history of the NBA in Luka Doncic & Kyrie Irving."Van Gundy said to Miller on the TV broadcast.
But of course, when you talk about the Splash Brothers, they are not known for their defense. So when Van Gundy made that statement, he essentially said that the duo of Luka and Kai are better than the tandem of Steph and Klay, which Draymond would never agree to.
Pierce also called Luka and Kai the best defensive duo ever
After Dallas defeated Minnesota in Game 1, Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Paul Pierce also praised the Mavs' dynamic duo. During an episode of The Undisputed on Fox Sport, Pierce called Luka and Kyrie the 'best offensive duo' in the league's history.
"This is the best offensive duo, not backcourt, offensive duo in NBA History," Pierce said. "When we talk about the skillset of Kyrie (Irving)... I've heard a number of NBA players say he's the most skilled player we've ever seen. Luka (Doncic)... he just led the league in scoring. You got two guys capable of really going off for 60 points."
Looking at numbers, Luka and Kyrie averaged 57.4 points per game this season. Meanwhile, the Splash Brothers' best season together was during their 73-win campaign in 2016. They combined for 52.2 PPG that year. When you talk about the best 3PT shooting backcourt, the Splash Brothers are undisputedly No.1. But as Reggie said, you can't find two backcourt partners with the same shot-making abilities as Luka and Kai.
