Los Angeles Chargers have already seen enough of one undrafted rookie
The Los Angeles Chargers made a minor transaction on Thursday, but it may be one that is evidence of a new coaching staff knowing exactly what it is looking for. The team opened OTAs earlier this week and there has already been one roster casualty as the team has waived offensive tackle Tyler Smith.
Smith was a four-year starter at Western Carolina in college and signed with the Chargers right after the draft. The team has seen him in a handful of practices and that was all that was needed to determine that he is not a fit.
New head coach Jim Harbaugh emphasizes offensive line play and is looking to build a bully with his offensive front. Smith, a 6-foot-8, 310-pound tackle from Laurinburg, North Carolina, will not be part of that.
Chargers have spot open after waiving Tyler Smith
The Chargers still have 15 offensive linemen on the roster. The team now has one spot open on the 90-man roster.
Smith has plenty of time to see if he can catch on with a different team and try to at least make a practice squad before the season kicks off.
