Donald Trump's Crowd Size Under Scrutiny

Donald Trump's Crowd Size Under Scrutiny Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event at Crotona Park in the South Bronx on Thursday, May 23, 2024 in New York City.

The size of the crowd at Donald Trump's latest rally has come under scrutiny with people giving varied accounts about the number of people who attended it.

Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party's presidential nomination, held a large rally in a Democratic borough of New York City on Thursday to drum up support ahead of November's presidential election. He told supporters at Crotona Park, South Bronx, of his potential plans for the city if he is elected to the White House.

The rally had a permit for 3,500 people, according to the New York Times which cited the Police Department. However, some said many more attended the event. Steven Cheung, spokesperson for Trump, toldNewsweek in an email after the event that 25,000 people attended.

Meanwhile, John Tabacco, a Newsmax reporter praised the event in a video and said he estimated that there was around "25,000 to 30,000" people. Bo Loudon said on X, formerly Twitter, that "over 30,000 people" went to the rally.

CNN National Correspondent Kristen Holmes told viewers that there was "a bigger crowd than Democrats would like to see." She added that at some rallies, the Trump campaign brings people from other areas but many of the people she spoke to at the Bronx rally were locals.

However, X account the Shallow State wrote that the "size of the crowd was small." And attorney and Trump critic Ron Filipkowski said: "Right-wing media can hype this Bronx rally all they want. In a city of over 8 million people Trump drew 4,000 tops. That's with a lot of people from out of state."

MSNBC host Jonathan Lemire also said the crowd was around 7,000 people during a show.

Newsweek could not independently verify the number of people who attended the event.

Trump said at the rally he would support New York's Democratic leaders if he is elected as president.

"As soon as I get back into the Oval Office, I am going to pick up the phone and I'm going to call your mayor and your governor, and I'm going to say, 'this is President Trump and I want to come back and help,'" said Trump, who was a lifelong New Yorker until he officially transferred his residency to Palm Beach, Florida, in 2019.

"You have a Democrat governor, you have a Democrat mayor and we are going to work with them, and we are going to get this state and this city at a level that it's never seen before," he said.

Some people mocked the former president online over another part of his speech in which he talked about getting hispants on in the morning.
