Brian Wilson's Daughters Say He's 'Doing Great' as Beach Boys Documentary Launches: 'He's a Survivor'

Brian Wilson's family is staying positive.

On Tuesday, May 21 at a world premiere screening of the new Disney+ documentary The Beach Boys, the "Good Vibrations" artist's daughters Carnie and Wendy Wilson — whom he shares with with ex-wife Marilyn Wilson — opened up about their father's health.

"He is doing great! He is doing great. Everyday he is in physical therapy. I'm cooking for him, he's spending a lot of time with his children now, his family," Carnie, 56, told Entertainment Tonightat Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre. "I'm so happy he's here tonight."

Of his condition, Wendy, 54, said, "I think he's doing really good under the circumstances that he's going through right now."

She added: "But, you know, he's a survivor. That's my dad. He's very tough, a very strong person. So yeah, I'm glad he's coming tonight and I think that he'll really enjoy it, actually."

Wilson, 81, made his first red carpet-appearance since his conservatorship was approved by a judge earlier this month on Tuesday, May 21, at the premiere of the upcoming doc.

The Beach Boys co-founder appeared in good spirits as he posed for photographers wearing a green button-up shirt at the event promoting The Beach Boys.

In February, Wilson's family filed for his conservatorship, shortly after the legendary musician's wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, died at 77 on Jan. 30, 2024. The pair married in 1995.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the "Kokomo" musician is suffering from a “neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia)” that impedes his ability to properly take care of himself.

In a statement to PEOPLE in February, Wilson's family said: “Following the passing of Brian’s beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian’s doctors (and consistent with family processes put in place by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person."

“This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family,” said the statement.

Wilson’s longtime business manager LeeAnn Hard and manager and publicist Jean Sievers were approved as co-conservators in a May 9 court filing, as previously reported by PEOPLE.

Additionally, Wilson’s children — Carnie, Wendy, Dakota Rose, Dylan, Delanie Rae, Dash, and Daria — must also be consulted “regarding all material-related healthcare decisions.”
