Jake Gyllenhaal Owns Up to 'Stalking' — But Not Killing — His Mistress in “Presumed Innocent” Trailer
The first two episodes of the Apple TV+ limited series premiere June 12, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday
Jake Gyllenhaal needs an alibi.
In the trailer for Apple TV+’s latest limited series Presumed Innocent, Gyllenhaal, 43, assumes the role of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, a family man whose infidelity comes to light when he is suspected of murdering his mistress. The investigation comes between his marriage to Barbara, played by Preacher’s Ruth Negga.
“I did not kill her,” Rusty says at the teaser’s onset. His statement would later punctuate every beat of the dramatic first look into the eight-episode thriller.
Details of his extramarital affair with his colleague Carolyn (Renate Reinsve) are revealed throughout the trailer, such as the fact that he was present at her apartment on the night of the homicide and that he was obsessed with her.
"I was basically stalking her," Rusty says in the trailer.
Barbara is questioned by reporters about the case, while Rusty searches for the truth — or ways to deflect the blame.
Based on Scott Turow's 1987 legal thriller by the same name, Presumed Innocent “takes viewers on a journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney's office when one of its own is suspected of a crime,” per the series’s logline.
“The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” the synopsis concludes.

A teaser released on May 1 established the background for Rusty’s relationship with Carolyn. Gyllenhaal’s Rusty explained, “Love isn’t what people tell you that it is. In my experience, it’s just something that grows, until one day, you just find yourself needing someone.”
“That’s how it was with Carolyn. She woke up something inside me,” Rusty admitted.
Presumed Innocent also stars Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, Renate Reinsve, Lily Rabe, O-T Fagbenle and Nana Mensah.

The 1987 novel was previously adapted into a motion picture in 1990 featuring Harrison Ford as Rusty, Greta Scacchi as Carolyn and Bonnie Bedelia as Barbara.
Gyllenhaal recently led the film Road House, a remake of Patrick Swayze’s 1989 movie. To physically prepare for his role as a retired UFC fighter who becomes a Florida Keys bar bouncer, Gyllenhaal told PEOPLE that it took an hour and a half of daily training before going to work.

"I'll tell you that being where I am — 10 years ago I made Southpaw, which is another fight movie, and I was in a different place,” he said. “My body was, I knew that I needed help with nutrition and I knew I needed to keep myself safe from injury and I needed to also be able to have the aesthetics of the whole role.”
