Deter mice and rats with this everyday household item Rats and mice can spread diseases, so it is advisable to banish them from your home as soon as you can

Rodents can be a scourge on your household if they manage to gain entry. Not only can they multiply in number quickly, but they can also cause damage and ruin food stocks by gnawing on and defecating on or near them.

They leave their calling cards all over the home, in the shape of droppings and holes in certain areas, such as walls or floors. Similarly, they can leave behind pungent smells that are linked to their excrement and urine.

These small mammals can also cause diseases. Weil's disease, listeria, and Hantavirus are all linked to rodents, so - if they have entered your home - it is of vital importance that you banish them quickly.

There are many methods to eradicate mice and rats from your household. While some steps - such as hiring exterminators - may be expensive, luckily, others are cost-effective and can be fashioned from everyday items you will find in your house.

Carlos Garcia, expert cleaner and son of the founders of Total Clean, told The Express outlined some rodent repellent tips and tricks, including a ''natural'' repellent. Some of these ingredients are likely to already be in your home.

Added together peppermint oil and vinegar are a potent combination when it comes to deterring rats and mice from entering your home. Both cost less than $50 in most stores.

The pest experts at FoxPest say that rodents cannot stand the sharp smell of the oil and vinegar cocktail and this will keep them at bay. Using the combination to clean the areas where you have known rats and mice to have congregated and will remove their scent.

Keeping your home clean and removing any source of food for the rodents will also prevent them from entering your home. "To deter rodents like rats and mice, I highly recommend getting rid of potential food sources by sealing food in airtight containers and keeping your living space clean," Carlos said.

Plugging gaps and sealing potential entrances to your home is also an advisable step to take to scare off rats and mice. "If you're using traps, think about setting them strategically and consider using natural repellents like peppermint oil or placing cotton balls soaked in vinegar near their entry points," said Carlos.
