Selena Gomez Cries After Emilia Pérez Receives the Longest Standing Ovation at 2024 Cannes Film Festival
Selena Gomez is not only shutting down the red carpet at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival but also the actual theater.
As reported by multiple publications, Selena Gomez and her fellow cast members on Emilia Pérez have received the biggest standing ovation at Cannes so far this year, which has understandably moved the actor and beauty mogul to tears.
According to Variety, during its premiere on May 18, 2024, Emilia Pérez — which also stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Édgar Ramírez — earned the longest standing ovation at the festival, clocking in at over 11 minutes, per Deadline.
In videos from the night shared across social media, Gomez looks visibly flustered as the crowd praised the movie, which ultimately moved her to tears. Gomez was not alone, as festival goers also captured Saldaña getting emotional during the ovation.
Co-written and directed by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language crime musical drama following the story of a feared cartel boss who undergoes gender-affirming surgery. Gomez, whose most recent acting credits feature Only Murders in the Building, plays Jessi, Pérez's estranged wife, in the movie. After wrapping filming, Gomez claimed that "working on this film has completely changed my life" on Instagram, later describing her role as “one of the most challenging things I'd done.”
In the same interview, Gomez also revealed she is very selective of the roles she takes on at the moment. "I don't think I've been able to even touch the surface of what I know I'm capable of doing," she explained. "I'm very selective or else I'd been in all of the movies that I get offered. I just fight for my roles and I'm always auditioning, so I like to earn it."
Emilia Pérez, which Gomez filmed in 2023, is scheduled to have its theatrical release in France on August 28, 2024.
