Lakers coach rumors timeline: How conflicting Adrian Wojnarowski, Shams Charania reports have shaped LA's search

The Lakers' search for their next head coach has been an interesting one, to say the least.

After firing Darvin Ham in early May, Los Angeles has been subjected to several rumors regarding the direction it would head for its next leader. As conflicting reports surfaced, the strongest rumors linked the franchise to UConn head coach Dan Hurley, who officially turned down the job in hopes of leading the Huskies to a third consecutive NCAA championship.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic's Shams Charania have provided updates throughout LA's coaching search but the insiders have given conflicting reports, causing a divide among NBA fans who do not know which information to subscribe to.

As LA's head coach search heads into its second month, here's an updated timeline of what each insider has said about the leading candidates.

Lakers coach rumors timeline

May 3, 2024:Lakers announce the dismissal of head coach Darvin Ham.

"While this was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action following a full review of the season," said Lakers GM Rob Pelinka in a statement. "This organization will remain unwavering in its commitment to deliver championship-caliber basketball to Lakers fans around the world."

May 3, 2024:The Athletic's Shams Charania reports Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson and JJ Redick are among potential candidates for the position.

May 13, 2024:ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin report that "the initial interview list is expected to include assistant candidates such as Miami's Chris Quinn and New Orleans' James Borrego." Redick is mentioned in the report as one of the individuals Pelinka "has been gathering information on."

May 14, 2024:Redick, Borrego and Celtics assistant Sam Cassell "have emerged as the initial leading head coach targets," according to Charania and Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

May 15, 2024:The Lakers receive permission to interview a list of candidates that includes Borrego, Cassell, Quinn, Nuggets assistant David Adelman and Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, according to Wojnarowski.

May 21, 2024:Charania reports that LA has held formal meetings with Redick, Borrego and Cassell while lining up meetings with Adelman, Nori and Quinn.

May 29, 2024:Wojnarowski provides an updateon the search, reporting that Borrego is traveling to Los Angeles for an in-person meeting with the franchise. Wojnarowski adds that in the coming days, more candidates will do the same for deeper conversations with the Lakers.

June 4, 2024:According to Charania, the Lakers are "zeroing in" on Redick as the front-runner to be the franchise's next coach. Charania's report clarifies that no final decision had been made but indicated that Redick was the leading choice.

June 6, 2024:UConn men's basketball head coach Dan Hurley is the target of LA's coaching search, according to Wojnarowski.

The report adds that the Lakers "are preparing a massive, long-term contract offer to bring the back-to-back national champion to the NBA," as Hurley has "been at the forefront of the Lakers’ search from the beginning of the process."

Wojnarowski later reports that Hurley will head to Southern California to meet with Lakers brass, who are "eager to close on a deal."

June 9, 2024:Hurley is conflicted, according to Wojnarowski, who reports that the "Lakers made a 'compelling case' to him in LA but [Hurley] loves what he’s built with the two-time defending national champions and is weighing it all now.

June 10, 2024:Hurley turns down a six-year, $70 million contract offer from the Lakers, as reported by Wojnarowski. As a follow-up, Wojnarowski adds the Lakers will resume their search by maintaining focus on Borrego and holding their first formal interview with Redick. That's at odds with a report from Charania on June 4, which stated that Redick was "the first candidate to have a face-to-face meeting with the Lakers three weeks ago."

According to Wojnarowski, LA hopes to hire a head coach before the June 26 NBA Draft.

June 11, 2024: "[Hurley] was not the No. 1 candidate to go pursue from the start," according to Charania.

Charania adds that there is league-wide questioning of Hurley's intentions and if his discussions with the Lakers were a leverage play.

Later, Charania appears on the Pat McAfee show to further address the rumors. Charania appears to use sarcasm when saying, "They've had this week, after losing out on Dan Hurley — I guess — they've had this time to go get James Borrego."
