Controversial new curfew laws have passed NT Parliament. Here's what you need to know
There's still a handful of parliamentary sitting days left before the August election, but the campaign has already begun. I want to be able to make a difference and lead a great life into the territory for the next, you know, 30 or 40 years until the bloody day I die. What the CLP wants to see is people who should not be out on our streets, put behind bars to keep our community safe. Crime now confirmed as a key debate topic, both sides of Parliament in furious agreement tonight, waving through laws allowing the police commissioner to declare snap curfews. That's despite senior Labour figures previously opposing them. Absolutely. All of my colleagues now understand that a curfew that is very specific, that's tight around those areas. Can work and does work in the territories parliament only limited opposition. There is no necessity to consult or seek advice. Rather these two individuals will have significant power and outside the house concerns that curfews will now be exempt from the territories anti discrimination laws. The reason why this curfew is on it's truly based around racism because it's targeted indigenous children, Aboriginal children. Nothing else, nothing more. Many others are questioning the government's recent shift toward a more hardline stance on crime, which seems designed to win votes. Facing an uphill battle for re-election in August, Labour has gone full throttle on law and order, hoping to water down the CL PS attack lines. Many from both sides of politics will now be wondering whether Labour has done enough to win.
